::OUR COMMUNITY
During our efforts to identify the "8 Wonders of Bourbon County," the friendly, welcoming people of Fort Scott were nominated. And, that pretty much sums up our community. It's a community of nice people. Fort Scott and the surrounding communities within Bourbon County are bustling communities with active civic organizations, volunteer groups and other worthy clubs. The community benefits from great industries, effective small businesses, fantastic school systems and a work ethic unlike anywhere else in the world!
The community is working on so many different projects concurrently, that Fort Scott and Bourbon County are moving forward, and moving quickly!
Evidence that this is a community of "movers and shakers" is the fact that Fort Scott and its local residents are the proud owners of three Guinness World Records acquired in July 2008! One record involved a team of Fort Scott residents working together to lay the fastest mile of pennies in the world. They did it in just 2 hours, 23 minutes and 1 second! The next was for a local resident eating the most McDonald's Quarter Pounder Cheeseburgers in 3 minutes! And, the last record was for the continual lines of coins being laid. It stretched 40.32 miles. Click here for more information about this! The attainment of these world records was part of a project coined "Pennies for the Park." The project's goal is to raise funds for the improvement of Ellis Park on the east side of Fort Scott. The funds are being raised by collecting pennies, because that way everyone can participate. Improvements will include more parking, playground equipment, a miniature golf course, sand volleyball pits, batting cages, picnic areas, a walking trail and outside basketball courts. The Youth Activities Team is continuing its efforts to make the park's improvements.
"The people of Fort Scott are wonderful! What an incredible trip! I can’t stop talking about your town to anyone who will listen. The biggest surprise was the people, each one kinder than the next. You truly live in an amazing place where you can feel the kindness and the sense of belonging wherever you go. I cannot wait to come back and bring my family with me so that they to can experience the warmth of Fort Scott! Thank you so much for your hospitality!" -- Amy from Boca Ratan, Florida
