Take
Advantage of Fort Scott!
|
Promises
made, promises broken! A town attacked at dawn! Thousands made
homeless by war! Soldiers fighting settlers! Each of these stories
is a link in the chain of events that encircled Fort Scott from
1842-1873. All of the site's 20 historic structures, its parade
ground, and its five acres of restored tallgrass prairie bear
witness to this era when the United States was forged from a
young divided republic into a united and powerful transcontinental
nation. Fort Scott is a national historic landmark. Take a self-guided
walking tour of the Fort and relive history as you walk acres
of restored facilities.
While
you're here, visit National Cemetary #1 or stroll the halls
of Mercy Health Centerand view the Gordon Parks exhibit. This
unique combination of photography and poetry create a rare display
of Gordon's most prominant work. Take a walk down historic Main
Street to take in turn of the century architecture, then stop
in at the Ralph Richards Museum to take your personalized journey
though the history of the Fort Scott to learn how it was born
and shaped as the western frontier grew. Relive the tales of
our heroes and along the way you can enjoy stories from curators
about our objects and their place in history!
So
much to see, so little time? We make it easy to see everything
in Fort Scott...just catch Dolly the Trolley, sit back, and
relax! Our narrators will fill you in on the history and romance
of the sights you're about to see. You'll see the Fort, the
Historic Downtown, a wonderful lineup of Victorian homes and
Mansions, and much more!
